The journey of Alex Tibola and a standard Nippon 150 — and the bike that’s still earning its keep today.
In December 2023, Alex Tibola walked into our Sandton shop with a plan most people would call crazy: ride a small-capacity delivery bike across Southern Africa. Not an adventure bike costing R200 000. A standard Nippon 150, straight off our floor.
Alex rode it up the Sani Pass into Lesotho — a mountain road that breaks 4x4s. Through the Drakensberg. Across Eswatini. Down to Durban, along the coast to Cape Town, and up into the deserts of Namibia. 11 600 kilometres through four countries, loaded with luggage, in African heat, gravel and mountain cold.
The bike never broke down. Not once.
Here’s our favourite part of the story: when the journey ended, that exact bike didn’t go into a museum. It went onto our rental fleet — and it’s still out there working today, earning money for riders every single week. That’s not a marketing claim. That’s an odometer.

This page is dedicated to the memory of the great Alex Tibola, who tragically lost his life in a motorcycle accident in Argentina in December 2025. We will always remember his great personality and his kind, warm face here at Mr Bikes. His journey inspired everyone who met him — and every kilometre his bike still runs is a tribute to his adventurous spirit.
